What is menstruation?

Menstruation, often called a woman's period, is a completely normal process that happens in people with a uterus. It's a regular part of growing up and becoming a woman. Here's what happens:

Every month, the body prepares for the possibility of a baby. If a person doesn't become pregnant, the body doesn't need the special lining in the uterus (womb) that it made for the baby. So, it gets rid of it, which is what you see as blood coming out of the body. This process is menstruation.

A period usually lasts about 3 to 7 days, but it can be different for everyone. It happens roughly once a month, although the exact timing can vary. Some people might have regular periods like clockwork, while others may not be as predictable.

During this time, you may notice some physical and emotional changes. These can include things like cramps (pain in the lower belly), mood swings, and maybe feeling a bit tired. This is completely normal and part of the menstrual cycle.

While it can sometimes be a bit uncomfortable, it's a natural and healthy part of life. And as you grow, you'll learn how to manage your period with different products like pads, tampons, or menstrual cups. The main thing to remember is that menstruation is a sign of good health, and it's just one part of what makes a person's body amazing.
